String Quartet in E-Flat
Fanny Hensel Mendelssohn’s String Quartet in E-flat was recorded live by ALIAS violinists Alison Hoffmann and Louise Morrison, violist Chris Farrell, and cellist Sari Reist in Nashville, TN, on November 15, 2020.
Fanny Mendelssohn, sister of Felix Mendelssohn, composed this string quartet in 1834, and it was performed only once. Her famous brother disapproved of it for its lack of discipline in musical form, and she never wrote another string quartet. However, she changed nothing, and what we hear today is what she wrote in 1834, making it one of the first surviving string quartets written by a woman.
