Wish by Valerie Coleman was performed and recorded live by ALIAS musicians flutist Erik Gratton and pianist Melissa Rose at Eastwood Church, Nashville, TN, on May 15, 2021.

Inspired by a poem of the same name by Fred D’Aguiar, Wish is a dramatic tone poem depicting the "Middle Passage," during which Africans were trafficked across the Atlantic by tall ships to be sold into slavery. Valerie Coleman is a Grammy-nominated flutist, composer, and educator. Her works have been commissioned and performed by major orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra and Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. She joined the Mannes College of Music flute and composition faculty in Fall 2021.
